The protoype SD45 was built by EMD from 1965-71; this six-axle diesel was equipped with EMD's 645 engine capable of producing 3600 horsepower.

Athearn's SD45 is DCC Quick-Plug Equipped and allows for the installation of your choice of a 9-pin or 8-pin DCC decoder. The most simple installation is the 9-pin; requiring only the removal of the 9-pin Jumper Board and install your favorite 9-pin DCC decoder. An 8-pin installation requires the removal of the 9-pin Jumper Board; solder an 8-pin DCC decoder to the port on the DCC Adaptor Board. Athearn's headlights are DCC ready and require no resistors and/or change out.
